Nice Monitors for your Desk, Better if you add any SubwooferSep 11, 2010
By MilMascaras Samson StudioDock 4i Powered Studio USB Monitors with iPod Dock
These are entry level near field monitors* with an integrated iPod dock. That's a pretty cool little combo.
(*Near Field monitors are powered speakers meant to be used at an audio workstation/desk, with the listener sitting only a few feet away from the monitors: NOT for filling a room with sound)
The design is pretty flexible, with audio connectors via USB or stereo RCA connectors.
BUT the iPod dock on top is a really nice dollop of icing on the cake.
You can connect audio and iPod dock solely via one USB cable connection, or you can connect the audio via RCA, and the iPod dock functions via USB, and both can work simultaneously. (You choose the audio output in your computers' control panel)
Connecting via USB only and having a digital audio setup is very clean sounding. I appreciate the option of having an all digital pathway if I wanted. I also tested the connection instead using a miniplug to RCA adaptor, and felt that these are decent entry level near field monitors (but they can't compare to my much more costly "real" monitors, Mackie MR5 MR5 Reference Monitor (Single Speaker) / Mackie MR8 Reference Monitor (Single Speaker)); The Samson StudioDock 4i feels like the direct competitor to the M-Audio Studiophile AV 40 Powered Speakers
Only the Samson's have an integrated top mounted iPod dock, which is worth a brownie point...
The USB connected iPod adaptor on top is nicely integrated, and probably accounts for about $30 of the cost/value within this unit. So if comparing these speakers to similar competitors, allow for the value of the USB iPod dock. That's why I chose these for my "real work" desk. I can connect/sync/charge my iPhone seamlessly, and I supplemented the speakers with an old powered subwoofer I already owned, and it is a really efficient and functional budget combo for a desk. (The iPod connector has a small bug: when I connect my iPhone 3G, a message appeared on my iPhone that says the connector is incompatible: But I simply dismissed the message, and the connector always still works perfectly...)
These lack bottom end: It is claimed to be 65Hz to 23kHz, but felt lacking below 80Hz. I completely recommend adding ANY subwoofer to the 4i's, in order to fill in the obvious need, and I guarantee you will be happier. USB subwoofers are too expensive for a budget setup, so I decided against adding a USB subwoofer. The Samson "recommended" Resolv 120a subwoofer that pairs with these speakers costs almost twice the street price of these monitors. So I just re-used an old RSL subwoofer that I had, and connected the StudioDock 4i's and the subwoofer simultaneously, using multiple miniplug to RCA connectors via a headphone splitter Belkin RockStar 5-Way 3.5-mm Headphone Splitter (White).
I have now had this working for a couple months, and feel that these are a good value for those who want to upgrade from small computer satellite speakers to some decent entry level studio monitors.
