5Excellent for Apple ComputersApr 17, 2010
By Arthur in Baton Rouge, La "Arthur in Baton Rouge, La"
Purchased from Amazon, and have owned MANY external drives. These drives are first rate, from the construction, to the design, to the details, including hidden heat sink under drive. They run warm (not hot), and they behave very well with my Mac Pro. They quickly go to sleep when not in use, and they wake up when the computer calls for them. This is an issue with many external drives. These, on the other hand, are perfectly behaved, very quiet, and fast. I am using them on Firewire 800 for time machine and SuperDuper Clone backups, and they are flawless. SuperDuper Clone can boot system and is a perfect substitute, just as advertised. I have used this method for years, but some of the external drives have let me down. Not these. I have finally finished my long and expensive search for the right external drive. Should have started here in the beginning. Almost forgot... Amazon was the vendor. Nothing needs to be added to that except... Perfect. I will add more as I can afford, to use as external SATA using the 5th and 6th SATA ports on my Mac Motherboard. Been less successful with this with other drives, but I feel good about these drives. One thing, of course... Put a piece of black tape (I used a square piece of black duct tape) on face of white light on drive. It makes the light tolerable. Otherwise it is like headlights from an oncoming car. But the black tape looks factory, and you can still see the light. You'll understand when you do this.

5Probably the best on the marketJul 29, 2010
By Stephen Wright
I bought the 1.5TB G-Drive Q a year ago. The hard drive was always noisy and was slow to respond when idle. But I had nothing to compare it to. Well, the hard drive failed recently and all data on it is probably lost. Check this [...] before trusting one of these drives too much. Well, I had already purchased this 2TB G-Drive and was waiting for it to arrive when the other one failed. (If it had only help up for another week I would have copied all the data to the new drive.) The new drive does seem better; it's nearly silent, can't hear it at all sitting under the desk, where as, the other one was always very audible whenever it was getting into motion. The new drive has a much more compact power supply with a standard DC connector.

Update: Ops, I posted an external link, I see that is not allowed. It was to the G-Tech support forum. Well, I must add to this review that G-Tech really took care of me in the end. It took a little effort to get a response from them and to get them to understand I needed the data recovered or returned "and" (not "or") the drive repaired. They recovered the data and sent me a brand new 2TB G-Drive, so I have no complaints. I'd say they are dedicated to customer satisfaction even if they don't always get it right the first time.

5Excellent for Time MachineDec 28, 2010
By Bolo Jungle
What a relief to find this hard drive. A much better price through Amazon than through the retail stores I'd stopped at (no surprise there, I guess). I have had a bad run with external hard drives. I wanted to use this device to act as my Time Machine for my iMac. I have been through 2 Apple devices - both failed (I learned afterward that they are not considered "server grade" and do tend to burn out after a few months of use - which was exactly my experience). I then bought a Western Digital Studio, which seemed OK. But every time I had to restart my Mac, I had to reconfigure the WD unit (and lost the history) so it was useless as a historical device. It also was impossible to upgrade the firmware with my configuration. A known bug, it turns out, but one that WD won't correct. This G Drive is rugged, works seamlessly with my Mac and is almost totally self-sufficient. No issues at all. You live and learn, but this product line will be my drive of choice going forward.

1G-Tech 2TB drives do not play well with othersOct 28, 2011
By Stephanus
I have three of the G-Tech 2TB drives, and I have to get rid of them. By themselves, they work great. However, ten other drives varying from 500GB to 1TB from LaCie are also connected to my firewire network. I had one G-Tech 2TB drive I acquired at NAB April 2010; I hooked it up to my firewire network, and used it as a Time Machine. Convinced these were good drives, I acquired two more, only to find that should I have ANY non-G-TECH drive connected to the firewire network, the G-Tech drives would either go offline, or when mounted, not allow my other firewire drives to mount. I tried using two different firewire ports, one firewire network for my LaCie drives, and one for the G-Tech. The drive I purchased earlier plays well; the drives I purchased March 2011 do not play well. Something about the firmware? Also, the G-TECH drives cause the computer to hang should I try to reboot, specifically when I have the other drives online; I have to turn them off before the computer will reboot.

When I sent my review to G-Tech about this, I got a "gee, sorry you are having problems". In full detail, with diagrams, I explained my tests and what I did to accommodate the conflict between the drives. Not a peep.

I will probably use these drives for backups to my Laptop, eventually give them to a high school or college, with the advice not to use them with other drives.

By the way, all the drives are individually connected via firewire hubs, which solved all my firewire connection issues until I got the G-Tech drives.

If you use this drive solo, you should (based upon my experience) be okay. However, if you want to create a disk farm, either go all the way with G-Tech, or if you are like me with a bunch of other drives ... don't.
