5most useful monopodJun 18, 2009
By Charles H. Harpole "unchained-heart-prod-inc"
The quick release squeeze trigger is a marvel. Good for very fast set ups with minimal fiddling with locking mechanisms. I carry mine with the lower sections extended and locked with a limited length that can be managed and then squeeze the trigger for the final set-up. Also, one-hand operation set-up and close up...
I chase Buddhist lamas doing ceremonies and must move fast... they will not repeat actions!

5Fast setup with this monopodAug 17, 2009

Have had this, our first monopod, for several months, with the Manfrotti 234RC quick release head (purchased separately). Very useful, lightweight system. The quick-release grip does what you would hope - effortlessly releases to raise or lower, and grips tightly. The weight of the lower rod allows it to drop when the handle is squeezed, for true one-hand operation.

Rubber bottom tip allows holding pod at an angle on slippery wood floors without worry. Large diameter tube makes for a stable feel. We use this with a Pentax *istD with 75 - 300 mm telephoto, but it could accommodate more weight.

The lower telescoping height adjustment allows different ranges of heights to be set with the handgrip. It twists to loosen, and extending the lower tube requires a pull. It doesn't detract, in my opinion. A more expensive model might solve this problem.

I'm glad I did not purchase a monopod with side height adjustments. This one is much more convenient!

4Bogen Manfrotto 334B Automatic Monopod -Jul 10, 2008

I've had this product for almost two weeks now. It feels solid and easy to use with the trigger to automatically raise or lower the upper section. I like it very much! It would have garnered 5 star had the lower section been as easy to lower or raise.

2Good at first, then a problemSep 04, 2011

Bought this monopod for shooting sports. Use it with a 5D II and a 50D, with 70-200mm 2.8L lens.
Out of the box the monopod was easy to use and smooth operating. However after owning it for 1 month and only 2 photo shoots it stopped operating smooth.

Not sure but the most recent photo shoot was on a day with temperatures exceeding 100 degrees. I could not open the monopod it felt like it was stuck and the release grip didn't work. I had to pull the lower section out so I could use it. Later that day after the temperature dropped the release mechanism worked better, but never like when new.

I wonder if the precise design and the expansion of metal caused this to not operate in such high temeratures. Of course I am not sure of what the actual problem is with this unit, but whether it was temperature or just a failed internal component; in either case it doesn't work like it did when new. Also I am extrememly cautious with my gear and overly protective. Sorry it broke, I really liked the function and design of this unit.

I am attempting to return the item for a more traditional Monopod. Currently own 2 680B Manfrottos and work flawless for a couple of years now.

I have had this terrific piece of kit in constant use for more than ten years, from which you will gather I am more than satisfied with the way it handles, and its extraordinary build quality.

I wouldn't dream of replacing it with anything else other than, perhaps, a similarly designed carbon fibre model - preferably a few inches shorter!

Essentially the '343' is a 3-piece aluminium pod that is quickly and easily lengthened from its 26.5 inches 'folded' size, by squeezing the 'trigger' handle, and exposing the lock/unlock mechanism.

The grip is twisted (anti-clockwise) half a turn whereupon the device extends to 49 inches; useful if, like me, you prefer leaning into the shot when standing with a camera, but squeeze the trigger again and the pod can be lengthened to its full height (around 67 inches - which is more than enough for average height users)

This '343' has safely and successfully been used with countless numbers of different camera outfits ranging from medium format film cameras (Hasselblad) to the kit I use today, which is a Nikon D700 and a variety of lenses up and including the weighty Nikkor AF-S 200mm f2.

I choose to screw the monopod directly into the base of the camera (or tripod mounting ring on large lenses) I NEVER take 'portrait' format pictures, so I don't even have to think about tipping the ensemble through 90 degrees and thereby running the very real risk of sticking the 'pointy end' into someone where it hurts.

Firmly recommended.
