5Excellent Pro Lens Rain CoverDec 12, 2007
By R. Berrington
This rain cover is designed for the big pro level lenses that you see on the sidelines at NFL games such as a 400mm f2.8, 500mm f4 and 600mm f4 lens. As stated by another reviewer this cover is too big for consumer level lenses. I have had mine for three years now to cover my monster Nikon 400 f2.8 lens and it fits perfectly. As a professional photographer I have to be ready to shoot in any conditions and the Kata 704 combined with the 702 has gotten me through some seriously bad weather for up to 12 hours at a time with out any leakage. If it is a light sprinkle rain I can get away with out using the 702 as my hat and the trailing edge of the 704 will cover most of my camera which is weather "resistant" but if the rain is coming hard I don't compromise. It takes about two minutes to put both covers on so if the chance of rain is above 50% I'll put the cover on before the shoot starts. I have also used the cover in dusty situations where it also helps keep the lens clean. When I first heard about Kata they made bullet proof vests. The cover may not be bullet proof but it sure works well against the elements.

Although it's a little clumsy to suit up, the Kata E-704 does does a pretty good job of keeping long lenses protected from the elements when used with the Kata E-702 Large Digital SLR Camera Raincover. Recommended.

5Great coverOct 03, 2010

I shoot a lot of Soccer in the rain with this cover and I love it. I use a Canon 70-200 F2.8 with it no problem, and can even use the 2X extender without the 704 extended cover. Typically I wrap a piece of vinyl tape around the edge attaching the cover to the lens hood, when I use the extender since this cover is not intended for a lens of this length. But with this mod it works great. Other reviewers have dinged this product because of the large Velcro ring. In truth, I don't really know what the ring offers, it does seem to get in the way, but regardless, I love this cover. I use it in poring rain without a problem.

I bought the extension kit because I use my 70-200 f2.8 with the 2x extender. Extension kit comes with 3 additional sleeve covers. Of these I can only ever see me using the smallest. Since this kit costs as much as the original cover, I wish they sold it broken out rather than forcing me to have 2 covers I'll never use. That is unless I can convince my wife that I need the new 400mm f2.8!!! Kids don't need college anyway....

None the less, the cover its self is GREAT! Can't recommend it highly enough.

2Too CumbersomeOct 27, 2007
By Carlton Ward "redjelly39"
I bought this raincover for my Canon 20D but have rarely used it. It is a bit cumbersome to get on and space consuming. The large lens cover is way to big for my 100-400mm lens and the smaller ones are uncomfortable to use as well. To get to the lens switches (IS or AF/MF & zoom) you pretty much have to take off the cover. I find myself using a plastic trash bag more than I use this. I live in the pacific northwest and it rains a lot here but I still have not found a reason to pack this in with my photo gear. Maybe if I ever shoot something during a monsoon, it may be worth the investment.

1Does not fit lenses it was intended forDec 06, 2009

I bought the Kata E-702/E-704 system for protecting my camera equipment from the rain, but the result is that it just sits gathering dust. There are a couple issues depending on the lens:

Both the E-702 and E-704 have a stiff velcro strap that wraps around the lens. Invariably it ends up around the zoom ring, making it very cumbersome to zoom the lens. This is a problem with a variety of lenses, both big and small, and enough to dis-recommend this rain cover system.

The E-704 is intended for large lenses. I tried using it with my Nikon 200-400mm, but find that the E-704 does not even fit around the lens's hood! The diameter of the rain cover is too small. Sure, I can use the rain cover without a hood but that defeats the purpose of buying a rain cover.
