5High quality construction - good price.Jan 14, 2010
By Klaus
The Giotto's MH 5011 3-way head is a beautifully crafted piece of machinery. At its price point it competes against other products such as the Manfrotto 804RC2 or Manfrotto 391RC2. From reading product descriptions and reviews on the web, I found that the 804RC2 is actually constructed of plastic and that the 391RC2 did not have a safety catch for the quick release. Furthermore the 391RC2 clamp holding the quick release plate is made of plastic. That disuaded me from those two Manfrotto products.

The Giotto's 5011 is made entirely of metal, except for the rubber covering on the handles and the 3 bubble levels. Being 3-way, it can pan, tilt up-down, and tilt left-right (lateral). Rated at 8.8 pounds capacity, it supports my Nikon D90 with 16-85mm VR lens easily. I have not tested it with heavier loads. The pan and tilt movements operate smoothly with just a very slight and reassuring hint of resistance due to the grease (fluid ?) in the bearings.

The quick release mechanism and plate are made of metal. You have to squeeze a safety lever and then simultaneously rotate the release lever to remove the plate. Safety is important. The lateral tilt (left-right) can rotate 90 deg to the left for portrait orientation. The up-down tilt can rotate 90 deg down to point the camera straight at the ground. When the up-down tilt is rotated all the way up (looks to be about 60 deg or so), the up-down tilt handle will point straight down. If the lateral tilt handle is detached from the tripod and re-attached to the up-down tilt handle, the head can be stored in a tripod case while attached to the tripod. The head also comes with an adapter bushing which allows mounting on either 1/4" or 3/8" tripod screws.

When I received the head, I found it was smaller than I expected. After much research on the internet, I've come to the conclusion that tripod heads are some of the shyest creatures in existence. Product descriptions are sparse and often inaccurate. They are always photographed at oblique angles which carefully hide important body parts so that it is difficult to fully understand the mechanical design and construction. I've uploaded some photos to fully reveal the Giotto's MH 5011. Don't mind the rough edges on some of the photos. That's not the head. I had to use photoshop to remove the background.

5Excellent Tripod Head for the PriceAug 17, 2011
By Head Cheeze "Horrorview.com"
I currently own a Manfrotto 190XB tripod with a Manfrotto 3025 head that, while every bit as sturdy as the day it was purchased, lacked some features I was really pining for. I was looking for something I could use for both videography AND photography, but, sadly, it seemed most of the hybrid heads I'd read about weren't particularly good at one or the other (or both!). I then stumbled upon this Giottos, which offered not only a fluid head, but panning arms, myriad levels, quick release, and a seemingly infinite variety of options for positioning my camera. The fluid movement on this head is silky smooth. It won't win over pro video types, but, for my purposes, it's more than adequate. The construction is exceptional, rivaling heads three times the price. While I'm sure I'll eventually go with a dedicated video head when I'm comfortable enough with DSLR videography, for now, the Giottos will more than suffice during this learning period, and will certainly stay on as my dedicated photography head!

5Good HeadAug 29, 2011
By Gregorio Vazquez Olvera "Greg VazOl"
Working with this head makes an easy job working with video camera takes to maintain a stable and highly accurate panning and how to fix is very simple, I have also used to make photographic pictures with camera (DMC-T2) and I made good shots, strongly encouraged to use video and photography.

4Does what I need it to do.May 16, 2011

This is a great tripod head. The bubble levels are a bit sensitive and hard to get perfect. However it fits my tripod and camera like it should. Good product!
