A robust video capture device that doesn't drag down my computer.Apr 19, 2010
By J. Large I've tried several lower-end AV capture cards - some worked some of the time, often requiring a proprietary program to perform the capture. Don't waste your money on other on-the-cheap options. I bit the bullet on getting this one after learning about Canopus/Grass Valley and their professional line of production equipment. In short, this box works, has several hookup options (firewire, S-video, RCA) and works every time for me. The built-in hardware processor is the key. It's certainly not required, but it works seamlessly with Edius Neo NLE editor. Makes video work a lot more fun!

A Converter That Really Works!Aug 05, 2010
By Theodore R. Spickler This excellent product is made by Thomson and is sold under the name Canopus and Grass Valley. It came with a seven page user manual including how to set the set of 6 DIP switches. I bought the additional power supply that avoids sucking juice out of the PC through the normal 6 pin firewire cable (included with the unit). Some complaints about the cost of this external power adapter do not take into account the 4 pin firewire cable that also comes with the adapter so I have no complaints over the cost. I have tried to save money by trying various converter units that are in the fifty dollar range and learned the hard way that I was just throwing away money. Spend the big bucks up front and get this one since it is rock solid and does the job! I ran it into my quad PC laptop (Windows 7) and asked Pinnacle Studio to grab the stream of digital video coming out of the converter; no problem. When there is analog video/audio going in (from VHS tape), there is automaticaly digital coming out. Pinnacle sees it as if it were a DV camcorder and creates a file as the video streams in. All the heavy lifting is done in the converter so the PC and its software just fills up a file in its hard drive. No drivers needed and no strange interaction effects with the operating system. Pinnacle Studio allowed me to create an MPEG coded file as the DV streamed into the computer. The file is automatically saved as it comes in so the device is so simple to use you can be fooled into wanting to do more. Just be very careful to set the DIP switches properly, if you don't you will not get what you want. Count me a strong believer in this device.

Good product!Jan 18, 2011
By XavierCole I'm using this Canopus to live broadcast high school athletic events online. Works really well. Just be sure to get one with a power supply if you are not going to use the 6-pin Firewire to power the unit.
