Description:

The JuicedLink CX231 Camera Mountable Mixer / Preamplifier lets camcorder and prosumer camera owners connect professional microphones and line devices to their cameras. The mixer mounts to the base of camcorders and features two XLR inputs for balanced or unbalanced connection of microphones, recorders, additional mixers, etc. The CX231 is capable of providing 12 and 48V phantom power to condenser microphones. A 1/8" (3.5mm) mini output and 9 inch (22.86cm) long cable (supplied) connect to the camera audio input. There are three gain settings and two attenuation knobs for controlling audio level. 5Just what I needed!Mar 09, 2011
By C. Allen
Could not be more pleased with this item! It definitely is "low noise", I can't hear any at all, even with the volume cranked. Small, light weight, portable, high quality...just what I needed. It supplies phantom power, even 12V, which works perfect for my Audio Technica mics, so I can conserve battery. I use it with my Canon T2i running Magic Lantern (to disable to cameras very noisy AGC). This preamp/mixer is a perfect compliment. And what's better, on their website, there's a truck load of really informative videos that helped me make my decision in not only buying this product, but mics and other things as well. Totally worth it!

This unit came to me not working. Also, the cx231 in my opinion is not worth the price. The exterior is rather cheaply built.

1JuicedLink CX231 - malfunction and bad build qualityDec 14, 2011
By Spaßfaktor
I get the JuicedLink CX231 some days ago. The first impression of the build quality was disillusioning. The housing seems to be handmade - in negative meaning. It shows big air gaps, harsh angles and the very small switches fits not accurate with the keyways. It looks like a 20 Euro and not like a 300 Euro device.
However we went to a music store to choose a fitting directional microphone for our Sony FX1000 camcorder.
And then the disaster starts. Every mic connected to the camcorder via the CX231 generates more noise than connecting the mic directly to the camcorder (with inserted battery in the mic - sparing external phantom power).
Then we recognized that the operation-LED of the connected mics did not glow.
Coming to the point - the switch for the phantom power of the CX231 was faulty. It provides phantom power only in the half-setting between "Off" and "24V". In the catching-settings "24V" or "48V" the CX231 povides no phantom power. This was the reason for the high noise.
So what to say? For my point of view JuicedLink spends more money in promotion than in quality management and build quality.
Take care and try to test the JuicedLink-devices before buying.
By the way: please forgive my bad English and be shure that I am not a hater of US-products. To take something as example: I really, really love my Fender Stratocaster. Best greatings from Germany!

4Look ugly but worksMar 13, 2012

I was shocked when I received the shipment. The unit is in a blank white box with no markings, only a sticker on the side tells the model number, the box is not even sealed. I thought I got a refurbished one. Opened the box, there's this unit, looks new, a 3.5mm cable and a hex tool. I was confused: Where's the manual? And what am I supposed to do with the hex tool? I don't recall I ever have to use a hex tool on my camera?

You have to download manual online and print it out yourself. The hex tool, turns out is needed when you mount this thing to the bottom of your camera.

The unit is made of iron as far as I can tell, ugly and easily prone to scratch. There are screws all over the place, I guess it would only take me 30 seconds to completely disassemble the thing. However you look at it, this unit feels like a garage project than a $300 commercial product.

There's no LCD screen, there are a few very old fashioned knobs stick out of the unit from all sides except the bottom, remind me of a 1980s radio receiver.

It takes a 9v battery, the battery compartment cannot be opened with your bare hands unless you have finger nails made of iron. I had to use a small flat head screw driver to prop it open.

On first try the unit didn't work, then I figured out it is shipped with input set to line rather than microphone. There is a tiny switch to change the input to microphone, but you need one of those tiny screw drivers used by clocksmith to move the switch, fortunately I got one at my house.

But, when I eventually figured out all the knobs and hocked it up, turns out the unit did delivery what it promised. I have a Canon 5D Mark II, with AGC off and camera microphone level turned to the lowest third click I am able to record relatively noise free tracks. Overall I do like the unit, but just wish the packaging could be slightly improved.
