Room to storeApr 28, 2010
By m. lafferty Needed more room to store photographic and video files. Another unnamed drive has failed me twice, but this product has proven to do the job.
This is the second G-raid I've bought and I'm pleased with the design and quality.

Works with MACMar 08, 2010

I have a 2TB and the 4 TB. The 2 is for video and photo files since my Mac hard-drive is full. I use the 4 as a Time Machine. I do not let either one run all the time the Mac is up and running. I only turn them on when I have new video/photo work to store. They started up and work as they should with the Mac. The finish matches the Mac. They are easy to install and use; three different computer to drive cables came with them. I can not speak to expected life as I have only had them for a short time, and I don't leave them on all the time. Very happy with the Mac, very happy with the G-Tech external hard drives.

So far, so goodMay 09, 2010

Have gone through LaCie products and not super happy with them. Grabbed one of these and I must say so far, so good (finding wood to knock on). It is quiet, works fast, and the construction matches the look of my MacPro nicely.

Unreliable, two crashes so far and still haven't received a reliable driveAug 27, 2010

Four days after receiving my new drive it crashed. When powered on it vibrated noticeably, even when disconnected from the computer. Windows 7 would no longer recognize it. I decided to return it for warranty service and paid for shipping. Thirteen days after receiving it G-Tech sent a replacement drive. Ten days after first use Windows 7 said the replacement drive needed to be formatted. This time G-Tech provided a prepaid shipping label. At this point I am waiting for a new replacement drive.
To have two G-Tech drives die within two weeks of first use is not acceptable. After a fair amount of research I found a total of 31 reviews for the 4 tb drive. Five of these had the drive crash soon after first use. Some had multiple failures.
Avoid this drive. Even though I'm waiting for a replacement drive I've purchased the Western Digital 4tb drive. It has much better reviews. I need a drive now, not in two, three, or however many months it takes to get a reliable drive. If it is even possible to get a reliable drive.
My original review posted three days after first use follows:
Poor support and doc for Windows 7 causes great frustration
Their marketing material says "A simple reformat is all it takes to ready G-RAID for use with Windows® systems**." What they don't mention is that the reformat must be done using USB or Firewire. If you use SATA Windows 7 will only recognize two of the 4TB. After formatting using USB, Windows 7 will recognize the formatted 4TB drive using SATA. This is not in the doc that comes with the drive or their website.
This is a 4TB drive. Virtually everyone will be using SATA. My email to tech support is still unanswered three business days later. If they provide phone support they don't publish the number. I spent two days scouring the internet before I found the solution posted in a users group by someone who had greater success in getting tech support.
As to the drive itself, the fan noise is noticeable, but not awful. I have a custom built quiet computer (fanless video card, insulated case, quiet fans, water cooled processor) so I notice the fan. When I place it under my desk I probably won't notice it. My guess is the fan probably wouldn't be noticeable over the typical desktop noise. The drives are quiet.
If I was rating just the drive I'd give it four stars, but the poor doc and non-existent customer support easily take the overall rating down another notch.
